Being competent to be happy
I think most of us understand that we aren't going to be good at everything, but we all need to feel like we are good at something to be happy. What is it for you? To build others up, acknowledge them for being good at something. Today, make it a…
Ikigai
The people of Okinawa, Japan live the longest of any people on earth. They have more people over 100 years old than anywhere. Interestingly, they do not have a word for "retirement." Instead, they have a word called "Ikigai" which means "a reason to get up in the morning." When…
Ya' catch more bees with honey
"You are fool enough, it seems, to dare war with me, when for your faithful ally you might win me easily." - Aristophanes Who do you have a conflict with now? How about being genuinely nice?
We do – we feel
We don't feel like doing the thing we should. Should we wait until we feel like it? If we do that, we'd never do the thing we should. Do it. Get your body in motion. Step out the door. Go. When we do it, we'll start to feel…
Are you "done"?
If we have made up our minds on everything, defined the boundaries around our life and world, and live the same weeks over and over... Are you "done", or is there more to experience, more to learn, more places to go, things to try, our own opinions to change, and…
Fulfill your personal legend
Paulo Coelho, in his book "The Alchemist", tells us that we have a personal legend to fulfill. If we have a deep desire, it was put in us for a reason. It's the universe begging to express itself through us. What's is your "Personal Legend" that needs to be fulfilled?
Are you free?
Freedom is not the absence of commitments, but the ability to chose and commit yourself to what is best for you. Have you chosen your path voluntarily?
Do something scary
Things scare us because we tell ourselves they do, and we retract and live inside those self-imposed boundaries. If we limit ourselves, we live small. To live bigger, do the things that scare you. Soon enough, they won't scare you so much, and maybe not at all. You'll get your…
A Vision for Your Life
Ten years from now, what does your life look like? What are you doing? Who and what kind of people are around you? How do you spend your day? What do you contribute? Where do you live? How do you live? You go around once. Get clear, and get going.
Commitment
You said you would. But that was a different day, and now you don't feel like it so much. But you said it. They heard it. You heard it. You knew it's what you should do... but other things came up today. They expect you to. Your credibility is…

Fascinating! Great post, Larry.
This is so true. My dad is 80 and my mom is 78. They both remain involved and active in serving others. It is great to see their example and the quality of life they get from this perspective.
I read a collection of essays a while back put together in a book called Ikigai by Sebastian Marshall.
The authors description:
“Ikigai’s closest meaning is *raison d’ĂȘtre* in French–what one lives
for, what makes your life worth living, why you inhale and exhale each
breath. But Ikigai goes further than that, to the point where your passions and obsessions can consume you … think of the artist or inventor all-consumed by his work, the boxer who lays his body and mind on the line in every fight, or the gardener whose mind is perfectly still among his creation.”
My favorite quote from the book:
“I’m not going to compare myself against people my age any more. I’m going to start comparing myself to the greatest men of all time. Instantly, I’d gone from top 1% of my peer group (people near my age, self-made, alive today), to the bottom 1% of the greatest people of all time.
I started looking at Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Tokugawa, Meiji, Augustus, Trajan, Socrates, Aristotle, Confucius, Wellington, Rockefeller, Rothschild, Medici, Zhuge, Sejong, Salah, Shah Jahan, and so on. Suddenly I was not doing excellent; in fact, I was behind schedule. In fact, I realized entirely that the path I was on did not lead to where I was capable of going.”

Without goals and work we perish!! So dam much to
accomplish. So. Keep up your goals and reaching for
the stars
This TD is from a few years ago now, but I liked it, kept it and reread it from time to time. Without a job to work on or projects to complete, I think everything falls apart. The Ikigai is a perfect way to frame it.
