In my work, I coach and train people all the time. I see some jump at improving themselves or their work, and I see some outwardly or covertly resist change. The latter often get left behind.
Low performers only change when they have to. High performers change before they have to.
“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we are not really living. Growth demands temporary surrender of security.” – Gail Sheehy
Sometimes we don’t want to change because we are unfamiliar with something new, and while what we are doing now isn’t working well, at least we know it and are comfortable with the routine.
Often I see people not change because it wasn’t their idea. The new idea doesn’t match their self-image of who they are.
Another common reason is that they see any suggested changes as a criticism of what they are doing now and they just dig their heels in to prove they are right and the new idea is wrong or won’t work. It’s their ego’s default defense mechanism.
“When you are through changing, you are through.” – Bruce Barton
How do you deal with changing what and how you are doing things to get better?

Such a true message. A person can choose their path, even cure themselves of illnesses with positive thinking. That’s my buddy (a.k.a Mr. Closer) up in the banner.
Positive thinking allows you to see the opportunity in all that you do.

Defeat

“A defeat may break your heart, but it’s worth it of it opens your eyes.” – Dr. Mardy Grothe
In order to have a breakthrough, something has got to break.
What defeats have you had in your life that, after a bit of time, you realize it made you better?
I needed to hear this today. Thanks Larry
Glad to be here, Larry. Grateful for you, too, my friend.
Tom Matthews is respected by everyone !
To answer your question, “every defeat”. Every defeat made me better but since I got over them and got better they really weren’t defeats! Every difficult customer is a lesson for how to better deal with customers in the future. Every costly mistake is a lesson on how to do it different and better in the future. Even mistakes caused by someone not following our directions is still a lesson on how we could do better explaining what it is we want. It is rare that something bad happens within our business where we the leaders aren’t at least somewhat at fault. When we do better our people do better, our customers like us more and our profits show it!
So True
I’ve just been to Papua New Guinea to hike the Kokoda trail , a famous WW2 battle ground .
Unfortunately I had to be airlifted out due to becoming unwell, I was gutted but I will be back , unfinished business.

Sharing a smile. Caring. Being kind.
Maybe life is not that complicated.
“It is a little embarrassing that, after forty-five years of research and study, the best advice I can give to people is to be a little kinder to each other.” – Aldous Huxley
“Kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind.” – Eric Hoffer
“This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.” – Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama
Being kind puts a little distance between you and your own problems, and feels good.
Thank you Larry. I couldn’t agree more. This Think Daily will go into my Keeper folder and not be deleted so that I can refer back to it.
Thank you so much Larry! You are so kind to feature me! Here is a tip that I do. When passing people on the street or in the supermarket- I try to give them Eye contact and a big smile, maybe a head nod. The reactions I get are wonderful! Try it.
Thanks, Larry. Excellent reminder.

Substitution
Everyone has a full schedule.
Nobody has the capacity to start doing something, adding something to their routine/days, unless they stop doing something else or do less of something else.
So – the process of getting better is substitution. Stop doing something – or so much of something, and start doing something better.
What will you spend less or no time on from now on and what better activity will you put in its place?
Taking time to reflect and edit your life is essential.
I am eliminating screen time and spending that time outside with my kids or walking.
To this end it’s also a good idea to drop enough stuff so that we create “spare” time in our daily schedule. Something will eat it up almost assuredly but if it doesn’t then you can work on your “would be nice to do” list instead of just your “have to do” list. Or we could actually go home early for a change and spend more time with the family! Opportunities are often lost because we have filled our schedules too full to have any space for “extra” activities. We need to clear up our schedules so we have more flexibility.

Your words matter – to YOU.
Are you a victim? Are you behind? Are you underperforming? Are you guilty? Are you unhappy?
There is a powerful tool you have, that you may have been misusing against yourself to say.
It’s the words you use to describe your situation.
What words do you use to describe your situation to yourself and others?
Good morning! A good day starts with a good message to you, by you. Having a good day is a choice, it’s not by luck that they happen! You make it happen for you! I tell myself every morning that I AM GOING to have a good day.
Words are everything. How you think them, say them and write them.
”I get to” not “I have to” makes a big difference!
Once you realize that everything and everyone around you is no smarter than you. That YOU alone are responsible for your outcomes. And lastly, that failing in pursuit of something is apart of learning. There is nothing that can prevent you from winning. Get out of your own way, Accept the challenge, and go!
Life is easier if you approach everything as a challenge instead of a problem and fully believe that there is a good solution to every challenge. It’s how I think and it’s how I raised my children. When challenges present themselves we immediately go into problem solving mode. We don’t cast blame, we don’t berate, we don’t go into the “would have’s, should have’s”. My grandfather likes to say “No use crying over spilt milk, clean it up and move on.”
Thanks for one more day and one more opportunity.

You can never out-exercise a bad diet
Want to get in shape and look and feel better?
Thinking about all the work it will be to do so?
There’s a way you can cut that work dramatically! Eat better.
Stop eating sugar. Stop eating stuff out of cellophane. Stop eating so much flour and cheese. Drink water – that’s it. Eat meat and veggies. Don’t eat big dinners and don’t eat within 3 hours before bed. After a while, you’ll be fine with it.
Now you are lighter, leaner, and feel better.
Add in some regular reasonable exercise, and you are a new person!
You can never out-exercise a bad diet.
I’ve been fasting for over seven years now. Love it!!
Thank you for shining a light on this! Think about what we’re feeding our kids. Chronic metabolic disease is running rampant in this country and I appreciate that a voice like yours is helping bring this to the forefront of our community’s conscience.
Hey Larry! Love your daily posts. However, as a registered dietitian, I don’t agree with today’s thought. There is no evidence that eating at certain points in the day make us healthier. Flour, cheese, and sugar can all be consumed and you can still lead a very healthy life. I do all of the above and like to have a small snack before bed and I’m currently training for a marathon.
Some people may not be able to afford unpackaged “whole” foods and so cellophane wrapped, banana bread might be all they can provide to their hungry children at home- and that is much better to have as a breakfast than a kid trying to learn while starving. Do I agree North America can be much better in what it provides and how it markets food? Absolutely. Is the average American diet full of processed high sugar/fat/salt food? Yup. Does the majority of people need to exercise more? 110%. But just some thoughts, as making comments on diet and nutrition is so complex with no “one answer fits all”.
Truth, sugar and carbs are the source of most health problems in America. The worst thing is the American dietry association has been lying to us for years with that food pyramid, its literally ass backwards!!!
Sugar; the first drug you will ever receive – given to you by the people you trust the most, as a REWARD for “being good”! Drug?? Yes, Drug. It meets all of the criteria:
It has no nutritional value.
It’s bad for you.
It’s Highly addictive.
What else do we need to know?
Thanks, Larry! Great points today & every day! 🫶🏽
I love the title of the blog today. Simple sentence with a lot of truth
Amen
It’s pretty simple Eat real food drink water and walk – that takes care of basic health needs
The crap they serve at school cafeterias is criminal !
Technically you can eat a horrible diet if you burn more calories than you consume. I’m doing multi-year experimentation with diet and health testing. So far, I can confirm that being not-fat is not the same as healthy. Fitness is different than health. So while you can be fit and lean eating cookies and doughnuts, you’re health will suffer in the long run. Unfortunately, diet and health are complex, but Michael Pollan has it pretty close: “Eat real food, mostly plants, not too much.”
Larry, I agree with your assessments and have found the same to be true in my family. My parent decided in the early 80’s to cut out all processed sugars, all synthetic fats, all white flour products and took it a step further and cut out all meats that were “forbidden” in the old testament of the Bible. The instant result was that my dad lost 30-40 pounds within a few months and has kept the weight off since. I am one of 10 children and we never went to the doctor while growing up for anything other than broken bones and dental work. We never had a sickness requiring medical assistance to get well. Now that I’m grown and have my own family and 8 children we eat very much the same. We are a little looser on the sugars because my wife has a bit of a sweet tooth and so do my children. We have had a similar experience with medical care in that we have only had to go for broken bones and teeth and maybe 3 serious sicknesses. Oh, and did I mention we also cut out all vaccines at the same time? This might not work for everyone but I am a big believer in not putting things into our body that didn’t naturally occur in nature. It’s nearly impossible to do that but the more we limit the unnatural elements entering our bodies the better off we will be.
I have heard it said “you cannot outrun the fork.”

Happy Birthday Think Daily!
April 2024 marks 15 full years of Think Daily! I started writing them in 2009.
For me, Think Daily has been a tool and habit that has proven the following –
To learn is one thing – to teach is an even higher level of learning.
To put good out into the world with no expectation of anything in return, bears great returns.
It has made me a better thinker.
It has kept me out of the dark dungeon of thoughts and kept me away from those sources of bad information and fear.
By talking about good ideas myself, I am more inclined to follow my own advice at the moments when it matters. I am still working on that. (Gosh imagine what a caveman I would be had I not been working on myself all this time!)
I have become very good at recognizing good ideas from bad ones by practicing. Practice builds mastery.
You have to become a better thinker before you can become a better performer.
Thank you for subscribing and being in this community and on this journey with me!

They do not have a contractor yet. I appreciate you!

We are very thankful for Jay Church. Couldn’t be more excited about anyone on this team than what we are for Jay and his future with BSI. Congrats Jay!
I am thankful to have shed a couple of key employees with the resistant to change mindset. The whole team is so much better as a result. I feel the relief practically daily.
