Don’t communicate to your group if you are not clear.
If you are confused, then being a good communicator will not help. You will only communicate confusion.
Spend your time asking questions of the right people, and understanding the situation and options to make the right decision instead.
I’ve made this mistake too many times. I have found it’s better to have no answer than the wrong one. Thanks for the reminder.
Such a simple statement, but man how many times I’ve seen and abused this principle myself. This is something I wholeheartedly agree with.
As a past manager I came to this kind of on my own. I understood that people have a need go gossip and often feel that management is keeping thing from them .. this seems more dramatic. When the answer I came to is that the manager should wait until things solidify and are certain to pass along information. Some things are in limbo because management above you is still working out a plan of action .. no need to pass this along. Some things are a work in progress, where you know the direction, but have not worked how how to get there yet .. no need to pass this along. I’m sure there are other situations .. but in general .. wait until things are firm before passing along what they are and how your people need to contribute.

I have found at times I need to let someone else do our training.
I become frustrated at repeating the same thing over and over and not getting the results I want. So by letting someone else say it in a different way can sometimes be what’s needed.
