The Most Important Skill of the 21st Century

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

There are many careers one can choose.  There are many projects to work on.  There are limitless things that you could tune in to.

But if we are to make significant contributions using our talents and ambitions, there is one skill that is required of all of us – the ability to focus our attention.

We must be able to focus our attention for a “long” period and go deep if we are to tap the valuable waters of our potential.

The world is conspiring to stop us.  But we are the only ones who have the power to choose what we are focusing on in this moment, in this minute and hour, day and week, month and year.

What we focus on expands.

Focus on your abilities and contributions.

Focusing is a real challenge and, as you said, the world is conspiring against us. With the digital age we are so closely connected to the happenings in the world that they can endlessly distract us, if we let it. I admit it’s a discipline for me to ignore the world around me that I have no control over and focus on the little world around me that I do have some control over. For those of us having struggles focusing there are many little “tricks” we can use to help us focus. Lot’s of books have been written on the subject. I recommend reading/listening to as many as we can get our hands on. Most self help books that I have read boil down to helping us identify and focus on the things that we need to do.

Well said, Larry. The value of focus can’t be overstated.
