I got this from a sign on the wall at one of my partner’s offices and I think it is a great definition.
“Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making that impact lasts in your absence.”
Are other people more capable, confident, and valuable as a result of your presence?
If you (when you) go away, will your impact last?
I love this!
Thanks, Larry – another great reminder of something I’ve learned over time… Folks we consider to be ‘good’ players appear to be noticeably better than those around them, but the GREAT players make those around them appear to be noticeably better than they are.
Put another way, ‘good’ players help the Team win; GREAT players help the Team become winners… there’s a noticeable shift in performance, energy, and expectation when that transition occurs. Truly exceptional players lift the Team – and the game – to another level, and maybe change the way the game is PLAYED forever.
Think of the consistent three-point shooter who scores 50% more points than a normal shot almost every time they handle the ball, or the quarterback who can consistently move the Team down the field with either their arm or their legs – and who possesses the knowledge and skill to know when to employ each ability. We actually refer to them – and Leaders like them in other fields – as ‘Game Changers’, because that’s literally what they do!
Thanks again! Have a Great Player day! ?
Well said, and definitely an objective worth striving for each day.
