Should you beat "Johnny" up?

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Somebody crossed you.  They did you dirty.  Should you beat them up?

We all feel that way sometimes (I think)…Ok, men feel that way…ok most men do sometimes….ok, many men.

When I say “beat Johnny up”, I mean calling him out on Facebook, or yelling at him, or getting in his face, or overtly trying to ruin his reputation, or treating him unfairly back, or yes, actually beating him up.

Recently a friend of mine wanted to “beat Johnny up”.  After he had a little fun talking about it, I advised him not to do it.  It can only hurt your reputation.  People probably already know about Johnny.  He will get what he has coming, because that is how the universe is.  People get what they deserve.

If you beat Johnny up, then Johnny will try to exact revenge.  He’s a bad guy, so revenge could be worse than what he did in the first place, creating more problems for you.  Johnny has family and some friends, and they will get involved.  Maybe Johnny will badmouth you online, and without the whole story people will believe it.

There are lots of problems with beating Johnny up.

The alternative?  Go home and go to bed.  See Johnny as pathetic and feel sorry for him.  Better yet, ask “how did I cause this”.  Because, you did in some way.  If you didn’t cause it, you allowed it to happen, put the conditions in place for it to happen, or you had false expectations about every human being.

Then forgive, and move on.  Holding a grudge on Johnny only increases the weight you carry each day.  More important than beating Johnny up is freeing yourself of the negativity inside.  Use that energy to move forward.

In business, the more people in your wake who like you and the less who have a grudge against you, the better.

God, teaches us this same principle in scripture.

The best line!

Or maybe Johnny is fighting an internal battle that we know nothing about that led him to lash out – hurt people, hurt people.
Maybe he is not pathetic, maybe he has an illness.

I am about a week behind in reading your quotes! I love your stuff Larry. I am reading “The Highest Calling” right now.
Here is what I have to say about this. I am a man of faith and I see this law at work in us, some call it Karma, but its a moral law that does work!
Galations 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Have a great day people.
