In preparing for a strong comeback, we have devised several plans. We have been approved for the paycheck protection program. With that money, we have 8 weeks from issuance to use the majority of it on payroll. We are not very busy right now, so we will be hosting trainings for employees, most likely virtually, and pay them for the class time. We will also be luring new design specialists by offering extended paid training at the weekly equivalent of almost $100k/year (the max allowed under the PPP). It will be an attractive offer to bring in new people that we would not normally be able to afford to do.

We actually hired another salesman last week. He’s a quality guy and it’s a good time to train. We also hired a contract marketing lady to help us improve in that area. Also, taking on some roofing work. Not our normal area, but we can do it (at least for now) remotely, and it helps keep people busy.

Plan, Plan Plan. Plan for “distance” everything: Distance Learning and Training; Distance Sales; Distance Customer Support, etc. We have the technology to do so; how we have to implement, because the markets are pre-conditioned for it.

Ignore the negatives and focus on the positives in your business. I need to focus on the sales leads we have and make sure we turn as many into paying customers. I’ll also use this lull to focus on tightening up my operations to eliminate unneeded expenses

Before this change, business was Great. So great, that just weeks before the shut down we were visiting two other towns for opening new locations. We would always fuss about we had so much business we couldn’t take care of our equipment and trucks the way we use to when first started. I always wanted my equipment to look as if it just came out of the crate on every job. Chips and dings in outer housing of equipment and trucks/vans were to be touched up immediately. Matching uniforms for each crew for specific days. Many things that helped our business grow and collect 100’s of 5-Star reviews. I have decided to use this time to turn back the clock to our “start out” mind set. All equipment refurbished to new. Shams and cleaning tools for our vans/trucks in every truck. Car washes are offering discounts from the virus that we’re purchasing. New uniforms. Purchasing shirts on sale at sporting goods store and monogramming at a discount prices. Even though this is a crisis and terrible, there has never been a better time to get a new business started or a seasoned business as a new business, saving money all the way. We’re getting ready for our Grand Re-Opening after 18 years of local success.

We’re reviewing our Fleet Costs – what trucks still have high value with high operating costs that might be traded on a new vehicle with lower overall costs?

“Blocking and Tackling”
I love and embrace slow periods(usually seasonally). It allows us to work on our fundamentals. Market correctly, answer the phones professionally, sell well, install properly and efficiently, collect the money promptly. Get the basics right and everything else will fall into place. It’s all about proper blocking and tackling.

Here in New York I’ve noticed a lot of people lost their vacations which means they saved a lot of money and seem to be applying it towards home projects so very positive attitude is helpful now!

Wow, these are really good ideas.

Keeping employees on board and ready for the surge of work that will come. People have time to think about, research and decide which improvement projects they will start.

Use this opportunity to train and cross train, including yourself. When the tap turns on, all staff should be on deck, trained and ready to go. Training while you’re busy costs productivity.

We took the oppurtunity to start KRS , we were looking at it as we crew, but this gave us a tremendous team boost and a great time to set up and train sales people, marketing, production mgt. Never settle!!
