My desk was piled with stuff. That tends to happen as stuff comes in faster than you can work on it or when you keep tabling (literally) things in favor of something else. The clutter drives me nuts. It makes me feel like I am behind and not doing well. It clutters my thinking.
This weekend I cleared my home desk (where I work half the time). On Monday I felt great sitting at it. With a clear head, I crushed it that day.
I figure if it’s that way for me, it’s likely that way for many of you. If you aren’t the kind of person that cleans their desk off every night, an investment of time to do so can pay dividends.
The same is true for shop space or any workspace.
How do you manage your physical desk space?
Ha! Since “ the pictures of our desks” in SOE …I keep mine clear for “clarity”. Same with a clean work space…I never could work in a messy, disorganized or loud music worksite! Training my guys to keep clean and lower volume on job site is always a continuous effort!
You still have to get to that stuff?
What do you do with it whiles its off your desk out of your head waiting to be completed?
I organize by Pile. There is only 1 pile of stuff on my desk at a time. It is only related to that one project. I give myself “X” amount of time to get it done and “beat the clock”. Seems to work for me. I don’t bring anything home but a book, my laptop and my journal. That’s it. NOTHING COMES HOME.
I’ve heard that stacks on a cluttered desk are “unmade decisions.” Periodically have to make the decisions, clear the desk and focus on the most important things.
Clean desk and clean home space. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Clean/organized is a must. If chaos reigns on a busy day, at least re organize for the next morning. I don’t handle early morning work chaos well…..or early morning dirty dishes, also a No No. 🙂
