Man up!

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

What awkward situation are you in with someone because you haven’t had the courage to have an honest conversation?

Do you need to tell someone what your expectation is? What you feel about their performance? How they are running things?

Putting it off is what you’ve been doing and it is only making it uncomfortable or worse, not only for you but, for others who are caught up in it too.

Why have we put off setting it right? Because we are afraid of how someone will react.

Stop being afraid. You’re the leader. Do what is right. You aren’t trying to hurt anyone – you’re looking out for the organization.

Let’s go! Man up!

“Hey _______________, come on in here. Let’s talk…”

(You too, ladies!)

I had to do this yesterday with a long time client. It was painful to both of us and may be the best thing is I have to walk on this relationship. I’ve put it off for a while, uselessly hoping it would work it’s way out on its own. But it’s done, and regardless if the consequences, I’m feeling hugely better about it. It was using up space in my brain tent free and it was time to say enough.

It is the sign of a great leader that “cares enough to confront” situations that can help the organization and individual. It is especially powerful if it can be used as a coaching moment with the employee to help them understand what they need to do differently to help the organization and themselves.

Found this out with employees!
