Logging out of the real world

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

When we log into a screen (smartphone, computer) we log out of the real world. We must manage our relationship with technology. If we aren’t present, we miss a lot of experiences and interactions with real people.

You are analog.  Don’t forget that.

A recent HBR article highlights the “LoneLiness” factor that is affecting millions and impacting their health and productivity. Get more social and not on the Tweet or Facebook or whatever. Get out and meet in person.

I agree…We get drawn into a virtual fantasy world (WWW, reality TV, movie, video games, mobile devices, radio) and lose connection with people and reality. We need to maintain real connections to people and honor people by giving them the sounds of our voice and presence.

Being present with people for a long time is draining for introverts. Introverts are known about needing time to recharge and process. Each person has an electrical field that affects its surroundings, other humans and even electronics. I need my alone time to recharge and my prefered and best method for this is to go for a walk in nature. When that is unavailable for a long time I do my best to meet and talk to people, laugh and enjoy but I as they say all healing is done within. I am on an extended family visit which will end tomorrow. I spent the past 7 weeks at my parents house surrounded by family, often sharing a bed with my little sister who came over especially for me. We used to share a bed for 19 years. I spent a lot of time online reading because I like to read and because sitting around and listening to pointless conversations about local problems I know and can do nothing about could only be tolerate for so long. Going online is a way of communicating and a way of escaping, simmilar to sleep. Some people recharge while type away and discard weighing thoughts others go to sleep. In my case sleep requires quiet and lack of disturbances which is often a priviledge. I get worked up inside when my processes are disturbed and it takes time to realign. Still, it seems that people like my presence because I am constantly surrounded by them and they all seem to be doing well, except on the days when I am noticeably lost in thoughts or when the lights flicker, the phone starts acting on its own or when the computer and central heating controller I touched refuses to work. Yeiks … Finding an optimal balance depends on the surrounding and peoples understanding and tolerance. For example, I was born into a working class and my current surrounding, even though does their best to accept deep down do not understand my love of reading or writting, they think it is a pointless hard exercise. My love of walking is also tolerated but looked uppon as another odity.

Dear woods, I am on my way to thread and inhale the freedom once again …
