Grit

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Grit – “A combination of passion and perseverance for a long term goal.”

Grit is a better predictor of success than natural talent and ability, and natural ability does not make a person more likely to have grit.

Research shows that on average, the higher a student’s test scores, the less gritty the student tended to be. A child that has to work harder usually gets farther in the long run.

Pursue what you love, work hard, and don’t give up.

As a child growing up and attending Romanian public schools, I was assigned a variety of mandatory foreign languages throughout middle school and high school. I had to switch schools to accommodate my parents wish to keep our hungarian ancestry alive which resulted in finding myself 3 years behind studying the English language.

My dislike for the language was strengthened by being forced to sacrifice a big chunk of my weekend spending in a private tutors presence (along with 2 other kids). To make a long story short I only passed the classes because a good friend let me copy her homework and tests.

Ironically, here I am many years later, embracing my dislike and pushing myself beyond limits in order to do what I have to do to learn to express myself.

Humans are amazing, don’t give up because you are stronger and more capable than you know it.
