The gift of high expectations

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

People don’t rise to low expectations.

If you keep selling yourself short, then you won’t know how to get the most out of other people, because you don’t set high expectations for yourself.

If you are a high performer and a leader now, you need to recognize unrealized untapped abilities in others and lead them to draw it out.

We all have greater potential than we are using – there is no question about that.

Some people have never had anyone around them that challenges them.  Some people won’t listen to their parents, but they will listen to their boss when they say the same words.  Some people are waiting for someone to believe in them – even more than they believe in themselves.

The difference between low performance and high performance from individuals on a team is leadership.  And that difference can be the gap between organizational failure and striking success.

Leadership title or not – the people who make others around them believe in themselves and do more are the most beloved – and people will rise to not let them down.

Proper leadership is truly the make-or-break ingredient in most people’s lives. Parents are the first leaders that most people will encounter. Good parents will help their children reach their full potential. I view parenting more like coaching than anything else. We observe performance, recognize strengths and weaknesses, give direction on how to improve and encourage continuous growth and improvement. Lots can be learned about good leadership by studying the great sports coaches. A great coach can take a substandard team to victory. However, even a great team will rarely reach victory without a great coach.
