Purpose in the work

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

When you are in it for yourself and your own personal gain only, your employees know it.

They simply won’t work harder so you can buy a bigger boat.  That won’t motivate them.

When you are dedicated to your team and your customers and their success, and act like it when trials come, they will know it too.  When you have a purpose greater than yourself, your people will know – and when they are part of that purpose, they will fight for it.

I find this to be so true! I’m pretty sure my people know I’m in it for them. I don’t have fancy things, I’m not greedy and I treat them very fairly. Even at that, I get way more from them than they do from me. My culture, and people are my biggest achievement! I could not ask for better people to be around every day.

We are a small business and if we have a good week, our top sales producers are getting $12-50 bonus each. And the support people that helped those sales people get $0. The owner does not buy new cars, boats or second homes and his clothes are dated. We know he is sending money to a wealth manager at UBS. His two kids will probably not have to work beyond the age of 45-50 someday, but in the meantime it doesn’t create a good culture. It’s sad. Luckily, everyone pulls on the oars because they have a good work ethic.
