We are comfortable with things we already (think we) know.
When we learn something new, we don’t know it yet. We aren’t good at it yet. It’s foreign. We struggle and it’s uncomfortable.
Many adults give up. Kids would too if we didn’t make them go to school.
But growth lies outside our comfort zone. If we don’t spend time doing things that don’t feel natural to us, we don’t learn and don’t grow.
The best learners are okay with being uncomfortable.
Great post, Larry. Thinking about this, it occurs to me that learning also requires that one – or many – accept / understand / admit / believe that there are things that they DON’T know and NEED to learn.
I find that to be a struggle in the business arena; especially among ‘Leadership’, but also among the rank and file.
The real problem with narcissists isn’t that they think they’re always right – it’s that they CANNOT conceive / accept that they could be wrong (i.e., have anything to learn).
Well said, Daniel. Learning requires humility.
Go, Ross!
Because of the support team in my life they have given me many uncomfortable opportunities and I have grown so beautifully in. I recently recorded a 20 minute video teaching for the not for profit I am involved in. I was excited for my accomplishment!
