“The environment in which we make decisions tends to have a lot to do with what our final decisions are.”
I am a big believer that your environment affects you in a big way. It is literally your experience here on earth.
Whether at home or work, you should set up your environment so that it helps to take you where you want to go.
If you want more peace and tranquility, eliminate visual clutter and anything that breaks harmony.
If you want to be energized, put items in there that energize you.
Sunlight is very important. The view out the window affects us. Order or disorder, colors, and space. It all factors in.
I can tell you that when I bought a new spacious building and remodeled it to be super cool, people treated us better and gave us more time and respect. And we behaved better too.
Take a look around your workspace. How does it make you feel? How must it make your team feel? Your vendors and your customers? Is it time for an upgrade? Are some things old and need to go?
Your space tells you and everyone else who you are and how to behave here.
Take advantage of that.
My wife constantly “pillages” our home of anything deemed excessive or unused. This can be frustrating but often leads to a sense of calm. I was recently in a home ~ 900ftsq with a customer that had 4 dogs, 4 adults including one permanently in a massive recliner, 2 parrots, 2 geese in the yard making a racket, 2 children and all the families belongings. I sat with my laptop perched on my leg with junk mail and god knows what else raining down on me as the kids kicked up a storm. The dogs were barking and the birds were squawking. I could feel the clutter and presence of all the people and animals baring down on me as I was trying to present . It took a lot of energy to focus. When I come home to a clean organized environment the contrast is apparent.
Often times I go into the office at Master Services in Knoxville Tn and I am amazed and grateful for how professional the environment is it makes a gee work environment!
