Don't look at your email until…

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Don’t look at your email until you have worked for an uninterrupted period (1-2 hours or more) on your most important project.

Prioritization – the master skill of high achievers.

Michael Mitchell

I adopted this practice some time ago and it makes a HUGE difference in focus and effectiveness. Turn off the notifications – otherwise they are like squirrels interrupting focused thinking. After the initial review I schedule times throughout the day to review and response to emails. I make sure that all of my key contacts have a way to reach me in the event of an urgent situation.

I absolutely compartmentalize my day with specific times for reading and responding to emails. So that I can focus on, and hopefully finish, important tasks. Everyone knows if they need me urgently, they can come and find me or phone me. Also, if this is a multi-person issue/email, lots of times, if you just butt out :-), they figure things out on their own! All of that being said, THINK DAILY will remain one of my first items of the morning. Right there with coffee.
