What is profit?

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Profit is the difference between gross revenue and expenses.

It’s so simple – and I know you know that.  But just think about it for a bit.

After being in business for 40 years, and owning a full or partial interest in 32 companies, I have lots of experience in all aspects of operating a business.

Many businesses have trouble making a profit or a good one.  Some (after all that work), lose money. (How disappointing!)

If you are one of these you have to be able to explain exactly why you lost money and how you will change things to turn the losses into profits.  If you are a new business, you will likely lose money for a time.  But that time has to end and sooner is better.

If you can’t look at the numbers and understand the important issues and trends (negative or positive) to explain them, you are stuck, frustrated and probably not feeling very good about what you are doing and the future.

Can you explain clearly how the final number ended up as it did and what you can and will do about it?

Trends, trends, trends…look deep and wide for these. (lagging indicators had leading actions)
