Changing Horses

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

There is merit in changing jobs and companies to learn more.  It seems to be popular these days to change companies or even careers fairly often.  Sometimes there are advantages, and other times you hope the grass is greener, but realize it has to be watered, fertilized and cut on that side of the fence too.

If your company or career is a dead end, then it makes sense.  But often it’s only a dead end because you aren’t growing, asking, learning, and taking on more responsibility.

The problem with job jumping is that you have to start over.  Your network, your intimate understanding of the business and it’s product and customers…the whole thing.

It takes a long time to get really good at something.  Jobs can grow inside the same organization.  I’ve been on the same horse my whole life, and the horse just gets better and faster as I do.  If I had switched into a different industry, I’d be starting over.

Ask, “What if I grew and added more value here, where I am.  What could happen?”

After twenty plus years in this industry, I can’t imagine being anywhere else and still having the same passion after all that time has passed. It’s never been dull, even when times were very difficult with the economy, it was still an amazing time! I love that we (this network) do whatever we have to do to make it work and keep it ours! Work on making it great, there is never an end to the assignment!

Love this. Wise words.

This horse changing has been a idea or thoughtful challenge here lately.
I’ve been doing HVAC for 28 years nonstop until I was disrupted with covid pneumonia for last 25 + days.. it’s really got me wondering if there are any other horses to get on or worth trying to learn to ride.
