Developing your team is the job of a leader. In a young company, it may be developing the skills of front line people. In a bigger organization, it may be developing your top management team or creating a written/audio/video training program to leverage your time so you don’t have to do it again.
Teaching is part of a leader’s job. But two things immediately come to mind for a leader.
A – How do I know what I am talking about? The answer is to spend lots of time each day learning yourself.
B – What am I going to say? This forces you to get clarity on what you want and reveals the weaknesses in your thinking/ideas/program.
By resolving these two questions, you get better yourself. Much better.
As 2020 comes to a close and we all have great plans for 2021 I m thankful for all the training and support that I enjoy through Contractor Nation and Think Daily as well as the Pop of the day. SOE has kept me on track and gave me fresh material to get better everyday. As the Trainer for our Company I sometimes run into a blank mind on the next training subject and you come through with a reminder each day that keeps the hopper full. I strive to help my team each and every day and a large part of my success comes from your training materials. Today I am thankful for you Larry. Glad to hear that your new knee is helping you keep this dream alive! Happy New Year!
Because of your decision to be a lifelong student and Teacher, my life and the life of my team members have been forever changed for the better. Thanks for being a good friend and faithful mentor.
YASSS! I used to lead a team of up to 20 employees. The best tool I ever used for developing them into leaders themselves, was to put them in charge of training certain topics for other members of the team. Periodically, I’ll get a random message from an employee from years and years ago, thanking for me teaching them in a way they could use for the rest of their career. Not only were they better members of the team at the time, but I love hearing how it helped them for the long term as well!
Very well put- I used to be a person who thought I had to do it all. That is, until I started learning that it’s more powerful to influence or delegate to others than it is to do it yourself. One thing you said to us in a previous Think Daily that really hit me was this, trust that people can do it better than you can. That statement hit home with me and opened my eyes. Since then, I have proven that statement to be accurate by delegating task that I thought were mine all along. I have watched my team grow by giving them responsibility and the opportunity to thrive. With 2020 behind us and 2021 ahead, I see nothing but great things for the Indy team. Thanks for being there this year and in the years past for me and the Indy team. May 2021 be the best yet!!
