You hired someone and they show up. You never ask them to think, to solve problems, or for their ideas. (Worse you criticize their ideas, and micromanage them, and tell them to come to you with every question.)
What happens? Their body shows up to work, but not their mind.
Aren’t you paying for the whole person?
Your mistake. How do you fix it?
(In some businesses it could be the opposite – the mind shows up but not the body…physical tasks are shunned -“get someone to do that”. Same thing – engage the whole person!)
I think a lot of business owners and managers are this way. They know their business better than anyone else. (This is true). They know from past experience what an outcome may be. (This is also true). They have taken the same steps along their journey and if the outcomes have been positive they keep going. Why change what works, right? What most do not tend to realize is when someone else gives their ideas, they are not saying what has worked in the past is wrong. They are saying there may be a different way to handle things more efficiently. A different vision could enhance the business, customer experience or employee motivation. It is extremely important to at least hear a persons ideas. It may trigger a new idea for the person in charge. It may also be a way to bringing issues to a managers attention without being straight forward. They are coming to you with a way to resolve or improve. By the way, even if it isnt a good idea, a person should always be told “Thank you for your idea. I appreciate your motivation to improve the business” Just my two cents. Hi Larry and Contractor Nation! Make it a great day!
I am thankful for you Larry !?
