Recently I had some 19 and 20-year-olds from the city to my place to ride four-wheelers. I have them up about once a year, and each year I instruct them and tell them about the dangers of pushing the boundaries. Nevertheless, each year it ends with one of them getting hurt. This year was no different.
I reflected on why this is and it is clear. Often we can get instruction on a thing, but there is no substitute for trying it and messing it up yourself. When you learn by getting hurt, physically, emotionally, or financially you don’t soon forget and you develop the caution and judgment necessary for the future.
“One thorn of experience is worth a whole wilderness of warning.” – James Russell Lowell
Perhaps you can learn from those who failed by listening closely to their story, so you do not make the same mistakes and can save yourself some pain.
“One thorn of experience is worth a thousand warnings” No truer statement has ever been made!!
Life is too short to make all the mistakes on your own. Learning from others is essential.
I’ve heard “A smart man learns from his mistakes. A wise man learns from other people’s mistakes”!
