Good leader – good team.  Bad leader – bad team.

Here’s how it works.  The good leader hires the best people, but some not-so-good people manage to get through.  The good people want to work for a good leader, and they stay.  The not-so-good are not allowed to hide out as they are held to a high standard, and they leave voluntarily or involuntarily.

The bad leader hires some people.  Some are good and some are not.  The good people see that the leader is not so good and they leave for a better team with a better future.  The bad ones don’t have a lot of options for where else to go to work, and their low performance is tolerated here with the bad leader so they stay.

In the end, the good leader winds up with the best people, and the bad leader has the rest.
