Being teachable

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

I created an online school for entrepreneurs – contractors specifically. The Contractor Nation School of Entrepreneurship (thesoe.com). In talking about it and promoting it to contractors, it has made me keenly aware of one trait of high achievers and top performers that low performers just don’t have.

“My greatest skill was being teachable” – Michael Jordan

That’s it: teachability. Some don’t want to learn. Why? I think the reasons may differ. Some aren’t ambitious. Some are in their comfort zone, even though they are performing poorly and have persistent problems – they are “comfortable in their mess.” Some think they know it all already.  And some think that they will look bad if someone knows more than them and they have to change since they’ve dug in on what and how they are doing it so far. Maybe some don’t know that they don’t know.

Those of us who know we don’t know everything and want to find out have a distinct advantage over our competitors. We are curious, we seek out those who know things that can help us, and we listen.

Which group do you fall into?

Good morning, Larry:
I’m loving your two blogs. The one for business people hits me right between the eyes at least 4 out of 5 days a week. Keep the pressure on!
Thank you,
George
P.S. I’m going to send you a copy of my new book and I would be thrilled to hear your comments.

Good morning CT from Chicago! Beautiful morning ! Wow….never thought about it this way. Guessing you have to watch what group your hanging with, and keep remembering to take actions each day to change who you are.

Good advice and I took it just yesterday. Never at a point when I’d say I know all there is for me to know. Taking a workshop way out of my comfort zone. Best way I know to stay at the top of my game. Challenge myself.

I actually have ‘learner’ listed on my resume. I would hope those who know me would characterize me a teachable!

If you’re a contractor who’s not enrolled in The School of Entrepreneurship, then you’re wasting time and money. It’s the best investment I ever made and is paying huge dividends. I love my business now!
