The "Little Guy" Trap

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

I have watched and coached enough businesspeople in my day to see patterns and traps in their thinking.

One is “I’m a little guy, this advice is not for me.”

Ok, I get it.  (Especially if you want to STAY just where you are – small).  But I was a little guy once (or twice or ten times as I started new things), and if I kept thinking that way I’d still be a little guy. The trick is for the leader to see himself and his organization as the bigger more successful organization they want to be FIRST (before it happens in reality), and then act that way, so they can BE that way.

When the leader does this in his mind first, and learns what he needs to, he begins making changes to himself and the world that is his business.  By making these changes, the future changes for him.

Don’t say “this advice is not for me.” Stay open to what the best, most successful businesses are doing – and you do it, too; that is, if you want to be like them.

I started Superior Stone Manufacturing about a year ago. My competition are all national companies and I have been thinking small guy, small business. Your right. I can compete with them and should have them thinking about me. There are a lot of reasons why not but that is not the way to think about it. Thanks for the advice I need to think and act like a much larger company.

Little, small, big, or large any advice is good advice if you use it right. Thanks for making me think daily.
