Happiness = Reality – Expectations

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

If Reality is a 10 and Expectations were a 6, Happiness = 4

If Reality is a 6 and Expectations were a 10, Happiness = -4

You work to change reality, and that is important. But the most important part of life is being happy. So lower (adjust) your expectations if you have to.

I know, it’s a paradox. We can’t live up to low expectations. We have to have high expectations of what we are capable of and what we will create in our lives. But sometimes, out of ignorance about how long it will take or what can really be done with the effort or time we are willing or able to put forward, we overshoot with our expectations and it leaves us feeling disappointed or frustrated. (Been there, done that!)

Let’s face it, when we set our expectations or goals, we may have made an uninformed decision. If you did your best, be proud of yourself and be happy – because in the end, that’s the only reason we want to do anything – to be happy. And happy is a decision. You can always adjust your goals or the time frame you wanted to achieve them in.

I’m not talking about the most common human affliction – selling yourself short. Learn from experience, adjust your expectations, and do your best in pursuit of worthy ideals.

Be happy doing it.

Yes I have been there and done that too! Fortunately there is this miracle where you wake up the next day and you get another chance to make adjustments and start over. Its beautiful, be happy!
Thanks Larry!
