You’ve heard the advice to the young – “find what you are good at and do that” and if you do, “you’ll always be happy” or “you’ll never work a day in your life.” Sounds nice and in a broader sense, it’s good advice for you. But as a business owner, that’s not for you. The trade you love and got comfortable with is no longer your work if you want to grow your business.
When you started your business, you became responsible for a multi-dimensional organization. One that has functions such as marketing, sales, production, accounting and more. You have to either be good at all of them (not going to happen), or get good at all of them (still not likely), or learn enough to know something about what has to be done in each function, get an expert to do it, and recognize when they are doing it well.
You have to learn new things, and you can. As the leader, you don’t have a choice to stay in your comfort zone.
